MDO (Medium Density Overlay) board
is an exterior type plywood with a weather resistant resin overlay
bonded to the wood by heat and pressure. This process fuses the
molecules of the overlay with the fibers of the wood to form
a bond as strong as the wood itself.
- MDO has all the advantages of
regular plywood as well as additional properties. The overlay,
which has 28% resin content, resists water, weather, wear and
degradation. It has a smooth surface not possible with regular
plywood, with a texture that paint can grip with remarkable tenacity.
Paint finishes on MDO board signs are up to three times more
durable than the same finish applied to ordinary plywood.
- Although MDO is available with
the overlay on one side only at a lower price, MDO with the overlay
on both sides is more resistant against warping, and is better
sealed against the elements. Because of this, we use only the
2-sided overlay product, whether we are lettering on one side
or both sides.
- We buy this MDO unpainted. To
achieve a smooth lettering surface, we prime and paint both sides
with foam rollers. We use only top quality oil based enamel for
the finish coats.
- This material is used for board
signs of a more permanent nature than temporary signs made with
vinyl faced signboard. Life expectancy of 6-8 years; we have
seen them look good for as long as 10 years.
